RUBIX

RUBIX, based on the core Rival technological platform, provides infrastructure and roadway managers with a turn-key solution for evaluating roadway infrastructure condition.  The solution includes innovative tools for field-data collection, information consolidation, and dashboard reporting, while eliminating traditional barriers and time-consuming efforts related to complex field work, data manipulation, and reporting. The simplicity of the solution offers a new asset-management paradigm based on continuous measurements rather than long-term prediction. This new approach offers managers an agile and efficient tool applicable to planning, maintenance, and operational transportation lifecycle practices.

The RUBIX workflow has three major components, as displayed above. Raw field data is gathered through either Rival Apps on mobile devices, or other 3rd party sources, and sent seamlessly to Rival’s processing servers. Pertinent information, such as infrastructure evaluations, is generated immediately after data capture through cloud based data processing scripts where it is then made available through a web-based mapping dashboard for viewing. Once complete, basic reporting capabilities are available that allow end users to perform further analysis on the results to aid decision-making as it relates to the maintenance and rehabilitation of roadway networks.

RUBIX Data Collection Methods

Currently, the primary data-collection method for RUBIX consists of acquisition from a mobile device (such as an iPhone or an iPad) through application-specific apps, or input from external 3rd party data sources.

Rubix Field Apps

Specific, easy-to-use field apps have been designed to collect the raw data required to compute information related to roadway and infrastructure operations. These apps are deployed on the iOS platform for the iPhone or iPad, depending on the end use of the Rubix workflow. For greater flexibility, apps are available to be used in both dynamic (driving) and static (walking) configurations. In mobile modes, certain applications have been designed to be in a constant recording mode when vehicle fleets, such as public works maintenance vehicles, are patrolling roads. In normal operation, data files are compressed and sent in real time to the Rubix processing server. Optionally, this AutoSend feature can be turned off and files can be sent manually using the configuration screen. The app portfolio concentrates on condition and performance rating for transportation infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks, and pathways. It does so through methods of automation, manual entry, mobile images and other capture techniques. Key apps included:

rRuf rRate
This is a mobile app used to gather raw data to compute road roughness performance data. This is a versatile app used to gather more specific condition data on pavements, sidewalks, and other infrastructure.

3rd Party Data Input

In addition to the data collection offered, the Rubix workflow can also accept other 3rd party data formats if users wish to take advantage of the capabilities while supplying their own data. Please contact [email protected] for information on current compatibilities, as well as integration of new formats.

RUBIX Data Processing Services

Once data is captured in the field, processing is accomplished using a cloud-based service. Files are sent from the mobile application to a RUBIX data processing server where they are reduced to extract and spatially reference domain-specific information.

rLoader – loads raw data gathered into the field into the Rubix database

rDR – GPS dead reckoning service used to aid and improve poor GPS data using supplied road centerline vectors

rSeg – Road segmenting service used to intelligently link, through advanced spatial analysis, all data captured to a segmented road centerline file

rRCI – Processing service used to aggregate and convert roughness parameters such as IRI, or response data captured from rRuf, to a Ride Comfort index (RCI), depending on road classification and/or speed of the captured data

rPCI – Processing service used to aggregate and convert raw road surface distress/defect to a comprehensive Pavement Condition Index (PCI) or equivalent score, based on industry-standard computation methods such as ASTM D6433.

rOCI – The Overall Condition Index (OCI) service generates a comprehensive quality index for each unique segment and sample. Equivalent quality indices (PQI, DMI, etc.) are also available in this service.

The type of processing steps, or workflow, is dependent on the end application in question. Jump to the Solutions section to learn how the above processing services are applied in workflows for road performance evaluations, gravel road monitoring, and other applications. RUBIX processing services/workflows are triggered automatically once data is received. The processing engine has the ability to automatically filter out data that is not part of or aligned with a defined road network, thus users should not worry about starting and stopping recordings at the exact beginning and end of road segments.

RUBIX Dashboard

The RUBIX dashboard is a web based, mapping visualization tool that serves two primary needs, depending on how the workflow is integrated into your daily operation. Rubix Dashboard

As a decision-making tool, the dashboard can be simply used to visualize and make decisions regarding the current state of the infrastructure in question. Typically, this is used by agencies that wish to keep the evaluation of infrastructure simplistic, and do not want to implement advanced analysis or mapping software. Summarized information, such as condition ratings, are presented on an aggregate basis (e.g. per unique road segment), and coloured according to relative condition. As a data retrieval portal, agencies that wish to use the information in other software platforms, such as a GIS or pavement management system, can use the dashboard as a delivery mechanism for the field data that has been processed by Rubix engine.

  • Road condition Indices per segment (CSV, SHP or KML format) showing an overall view of the current network situation based on averaged current information;
  • Historical report per segment (CSV);
  • Raw data files.

In either method, the dashboard is configured for each unique agency and is accessed through a custom URL, and remains accessible for the duration of the subscription.
